Youth Speaks 2010
Hayle Rotary Club held their round of the Rotary Youth Speaks Competition on Friday evening courtesy of the Hayle Day Care Centre.  Six teams from schools within the Hayle area battled it out in front of a packed and enthusiastic audience for the honour of representing the town and Club in the next round.  With a diverse selection of subjects, from "are professional footballers role models!, "Do we remember the starving children of Africa?"  "WHIFF-WHAM, SLAM, DUNK AND GOAL", the  contestants treated us to an evening of entertainment.

Sioban Osborne, chairperson of the judges, in her summary, congratulated all the contestants despite interuptions of traffic sirens to perform exceptionally well.  Subject knowledge was well researched and delivered with clarity, whilst the audience found the subjects amusing informative and thought provoking.  Even the answers to questions showed perception and were dealt with maturity by all.

To an excited audience and exhausted judges the contest saw the teams from Penpol School who spoke on "Do you want to live Happy, Healthy and be successful in Life - then READ BOOKS" and from Bodriggy School whose subject was "Should schools close down completely during heavy snowfall?" selected to attend the next round at Penzance on Wednesday, 24th February, where the team from Penpol prgressed through to the finals at Bodmin.

Overview of Community / Vocational Acitivities
Several members and their wives helped out at the 'Parkinson Hub' at All Saints in Tuckingmill, Camborne. This successful project was very well attended by clients and carers; with support & guidance provided by professionals and 'Rotary volunteers' alike. It is hoped that this monthly event will continue to grow, ensuring a respite for carers with socialising opportunity for all. For the first time - we were able to take these clients to a 'fish & chip' supper and visited the West Cornwall Christmas lights.

Mock Interviews with the Hayle Community School were well supported by the club.

Funded projects included supporting a girl guide in the Tall Ships Challenge, Leedstown Football Club, and the charity bike riders.

The Rotarians of Hayle and their partners, the Co-op staff, would like to congratulate all supporters who contributed to the Haiti ShelterBox collection which to date has enabled us to fund 12 boxes for the disaster area.  We also have members supporting the charity by packing, talking to schools and groups plus activively serving in the immediate past on the front line of disasters since the Tsunami in 2004.  A big thank you to the people of Hayle and District who made the collection such a happy, enjoyable eventful meeting of friends old and new, which will give hope to over 120 homeless Haitians.

Recently we have concentrated on more local events with staffing the monthly Parkinson Hub at Tuckingmill.  This was followed by the BIG BRUNCH at the Hayle Day Care Centre on Sunday, 14th February.  All profits were in aid of the local charity "Penhaligon's Friends" to assist bereaved children.

Calloose Charity BBQ's
A series of BBQ's has been run by the Club at Calloose Caravan and Camping Park. These annual fundraising events are looked forward to by Rotarians and visitors alike. The proceeds this year again very helpful for the Rotary's fund. Now in its 25th year, the fun feasts have never been called off, despite flash floods, heat waves and dodgy chefs! Many thanks to the site owners, who have enabled Hayle Rotary to raise many thousands of pounds for charity.

Stoke Awareness
This annual will take place again on the 17th April 2010 at the Co-op in Hayle. In 2009, just under 100 members of the public called in for their annual check-ups, providing a valuable service for the community. Superb weather added to the occasion when the public and Rotary once more enjoyed great fellowship - whilst getting some essential vitamin D and retail therapy. Happy and Healthy in Hayle! Thanks to Nina and Sarah for their expertise and Hayle Day Care Centre for providing the vehicle.

ShelterBox
Shelterbox activities are still taking place, with ongoing fundraising and shared promotional opportunities. Members continue to donate time and effort to the packing process, ensuring that Shelterboxes reach those most in need.

Past President Adrain Sumner returns from ShelterBox duties

2009 saw Adrian lead a 3 man ShelterBox Response team (SRT) to Somaliland on the horn of Africa, which proved very successful in spite of appalling poverty and dire circumstances. Four different plane flights eventually enabled the team to deliver much needed aid. The appreciation of the recipients (although impoverished) was tremendous.

Previous tours include Burma (Myanmar) and Sri Lanka after the Tsunami. Shelterbox being one of the first aid providers to get into the country and distribute vital help.
